Born in Tyrol, Antonio Sepp (1655 - 1733) lived for forty-one years in the Guaranitic reductions. He had departed from the port of Cadiz in the first days of 1691 along with other Jesuit missionaries (among them Antonio Böhm, or Beheme), the governors of Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile, merchants, slaves, soldiers, artisans of various trades and the crew of the three vessels. They stepped on the mainland on the western bank of the Río de la Plata in April of that year and a short time later, Sepp marched towards the reduction of Yapeyú, while his friend and compatriot, Böhm (Behme), did so towards the Reduction of San Miguel, on the other side of the Uruguay River in Brazilian lands today.

Sepp had a ductile pen and his letters bore the fate of being published, although he did not hold a higher position in the religious order, nor did he complete his priestly ordination. But the owner of a striking artistic talent, he was an outstanding poet, painter, composer, musician and singer. The account of his earliest wanderings was first printed at Brixen in 1696 and promptly republished at Nuremberg in Churchill's monumental work "A Collection of Voyages and Travels," first in 1704 and then in 1732.
