HISTORICAL / MILITARY OBJECTS

Art of fire.

France. Late 18th or early 20th century.

Carved wooden stock, with an ornate goat head and a mythological being on one side. The piece was kept in the possession of the Proust family and was gifted many years ago, treasured since then in Argentina. It was preserved in one of the castles of Langorain, near Bordeux, France, a region noted for its wine production. Measurements: length: 35.5 cm / 13.97 in. text-align: justify;margin-top:0pt;margin-bottom:0pt;">
The firearms made by the most outstanding masters throughout the 18th and 19th centuries were enriched with ornamental details that were destined for the European nobility and the rest of the world. Fine decorations in gold and silver, and on occasions, exquisite carvings, generally with battle or hunting scenes, allegories of the two purposes of this “instrument of fire”. In our specimen -of which the stock is preserved- a distinctive composition was carved with great art: the head of a goat that appears between the foliage and above, an ornamental mat, and on one of the sides a mythological being whose mouth a complex flower emerges.
