THE ROSAS GOVERNMENT REFUSES: WE DO NOT AUTHORIZE BOATS FOR SLAVE TRAFFICKING

Letter to Fernando Delisle. Buenos Aires. March 8, 1836.

Quarto (30.6 x 21.5 cm), 3 pp., manuscripts, 1 p., it is indicated that it is "Copy" and bears the holographic signature of M. de Yrigoyen, which certifies the Copy in its character Senior Foreign Relations Officer. Very good specimen. (The full transcript of the letter is provided).

The Foreign Minister responds to the note sent by the Consul General to the Netherlands. After describing in detail the nature of the subject that concerns him -the capture of the slave ship with the flag of the Argentine Republic-, and after making the inquiries, he affirms that “there has not been a patented vessel of this Republic under the name designated, and of course no less has anyone been authorized to engage in such traffic". For the Rosas government, it has made use of the Argentine flag "like a true pirate”.

And he demands the dissemination of this answer, since the philanthropic principles that the Government of Buenos Aires has always professed are notorious. And Arana abounds, these "must be known by the powers of Europe”.

For our part, we have located a citizen Juan Polar, registered in Buenos Aires in 1855, could he simply be a homonym? SEH-IX
