PARAGUAY

PARAGVAY,Ó / PROV. DE RIO DE LA PLATA.

PARAGVAY, Ó / PROV. DE RIO DE LA PLATA / cum regionibus adiacentibus / TVCVMAN / et / STA. CRVZ DE LA SIERRA.

Measurements: 475 x 380 mm / 18.7 x 14.96 in.

Exemplar with wide margins. At the bottom right, it reads: AMSTELODAMI, / excudebat Ioannes / Ianssonius. On the back of the Map sheet we read: LE PARAGVAY, / Ou la Province / DV RIO DE LA PLATA, / Avec les contrées voyfines de Tucuman, / & de S. Croiz de la Serre.

Very rare. We are before the oldest Jesuit map of our region, documented by the researcher Guillermo Furlong in his work "Jesuit Cartography". He mentions another previous geographic chart, but that unfortunately has not reached our days. According to his comments, Father Diego de Torres in his Carta Anua of 1609, "(…) makes an accurate relationship that coincides with this map, so that it seems to be the author of the relationship and of the map".

The edition that we present here was published by JOANNES JANSSON, in his Nuovo Atlas, published in Amsterdam, in the year 1653.

Furlong was able to locate very few copies of the three known versions of it. Similar to the one we offer here, he identified a copy in each of the following reservoirs: at the Congress Library, Washington; in the National Library, Montevideo; and in the Historical Museum of the Colegio del Salvador, and in the Mitre Museum, both in the city of Buenos Aires.
