Puig y Valls (1845-1920) was an important forestry engineer with a recognized career in Catalonia, where he served as President of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona and Head of the Forestry Engineering Corps with a long and bitter task of protecting the natural environment and landscape. He created the Tree Festival in Catalonia and extended it to the rest of Spain. His Trip to America book was the only one of his type in the extensive bibliography that he generated on his professional discipline and was motivated by his attendance at the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 of the which he gives detailed memoirs. His conclusion from nine months of travel is that the United States seen from afar looks like a fairy tale, but up close, "the illusion vanishes" into "the gloomy presentiment of a shifting civilization that has no fixed course." He contrasted these assessments with those of Mexico and Cuba, which he also visited.
