By Roberto Vega Andersen For readers who have just discovered this publication - the regulars expect and enjoy it every month - we inform you that Hilario's articles evolve around topics that, in general, are far from the most urgent current affairs. The monthly periodicity exempts us from that commitment and, conversely, encourages us to go deeper into each topic addressed with longer texts and far removed from the vertigo of news channels on TV and journalistic programs on radios, networks and the front pages of the newspapers. From a more reflective perspective, in each installment we bring together a plethora of authors, all qualified as references in their areas of action. Right now you will discover the contributions provided by Laura Malosetti Costa, Sonia Decker, Irina Podgorny, Abel Alexander, Guillermo Palombo, Alejandro E. Parada, Daniel Schávelzon, Guido Chester and Osvaldo Mondelo. As in previous installments, the diversity of topics gives the Summary its personality; this time with his approaches to art, ethnographic photography, collecting and the history of the printed word in our country. And each article written especially for our readers, a privilege that makes us proud. Now, our greatest wish: Enjoy it!

Editorial
The biennial of foreigners
Laura Malosetti Costa *«“Foreigners everywhere” (Stranieri Ovunque) is the leitmotiv of this 60th edition of the Venice Biennale, without a doubt the oldest international art exhibition (born in 1895) and the most prestigious – or at least the one that the planet looks more closely." The sagacious and committed vision of Laura Malosetti Costa places us in this new edition impregnated with the news that moves us every day, «[...] with two wars in progress that could at any moment escalate into global conflagrations, with evidence of a rapid and inexorable climate change, and with terrible conflicts between ever-increasing multitudes that are displaced towards – and rejected from – the economic powers that increasingly close their borders.
Augusto Rodin and the image of pain
By Sonia Decker *«From the appearance of the Venus of Willendorf on the banks of the Danube, a small piece that exalted the fertility and reproduction of the human species, to the arrival of Damien Hirst's shark in formaldehyde and its tribute to death, sculpture has traveled "by very diverse paths." In this long itinerary, Sonia Decker brings us closer to the figure of Pierre Aguste Renée Rodin (Paris, 1840 - Meudon, 1917), considered the father of modern sculpture and the first to definitively break with all academic canons.
The flames and the Cosmos
By Irina Podgorny *From the family home and accompanying her convalescing mother, Irina surprises us with a delivery that she places in a time that seems so distant and yet it happened just yesterday... «In Soviet times, the Armenian director Sergei Parajanov was an 'enfant terrible' of Eastern European cinema. The visual intensity of his films and his collages - dealing primarily with the peoples of the Caucasus - delighted critics and cinephiles around the world while being disapproved of by the Soviet leadership. The censors not only rejected his scripts: he was banned from working and he was imprisoned from 1974 to 1978 for propagating homosexuality.
Jaime Aime Marcet in La Gaceta Mercantil. A famous bookseller with a tragic end (1825 – 1828)
By Alejandro E. Parada *The story of bookseller Jaime Marcet is worthy of being made into a film. Perhaps we would say that it would become one of the most followed series on some of the audiovisual platforms that seduce us today and, in a certain sense, dominate almost in a diabolical way. His life follows the trajectory of an undisputed celebrity: a Spanish emigrant apparently of few resources, dependent on the bookstore of Pedro Osandavaras (also mentioned as Osandivaras), seducer of his sister Jacoba whom he would marry shortly after, bookseller with two stores , [...]
Tehuelches and Mapuches in photographic memory
By Abel Alexander *The recent discovery in Montevideo -Uruguay- of four early portraits expands the scarce Tehuelche and Mapuche iconography of the founding period of photography and opens new perspectives in the field of historical and anthropological research.
Exotic knives in Buenos Aires
By Guido Chester *One of the most rigorous specialists in South America in this tool that the gaucho considered an extension of his hand and that today has become an object of worship for so many collectors, author of essential books, gives us a look at knives from other countries. distant times and regions. «Retracing those distant routes is the reason for this delivery. Some of the knives studied, it is easy to understand, have been acquired from highly recognized experts, [...]»
Bound to last. Five centuries of bookbindings in the Cultura Fonds Library.
Bound to last. Five centuries of bindings in the Cultura Fonds Library. Such is the title of this study carried out by Renaud Adam, from the University of Liège, and Joran Proot, from Cultura Fond, and with the collaboration of Diane E. Booton. They write that “Nowadays, all copies of a book generally look the same. This has not been the case.
Comienzos de la pintura en Uruguay.
The prominent historian of Uruguayan photography this time gives us a panoramic view composed of the painting of his homeland at the beginning of his life. As in good photographic records, each section of the image is enjoyed by going through the details. This is what Varese has achieved by using as a source for his new book the commercial advertisements published in local newspapers from the beginning of the State, back in the late 1820s, until the 1860s.
Artist of time, space and metal
Richard Serra (1938 - 2024)On March 26, the American sculptor Richard Serra died at the age of 85 in his home on Long Island, a quiet New York neighborhood. We remember his life and his work, one of the most unique, revolutionary and notable sculptures of the last decades of the 20th century and the first of the 21st. Serra is and will always be remembered as the author of immense works in which the viewer immerses himself; sculptures that fuse time, space and metal.
The Creole collection of Don Osvaldo Enrique Monti
By Guillermo Palombo *Osvaldo Enrique Monti [1912 - 1993], owner of the El Cinco ranch, in General Alvear, province of Buenos Aires, is the protagonist of this new installment. "A man of very few words, Osvaldo Monti was a good mayor of General Alvear and a good president of the Criollo Horse Breeders Association," the newspaper La Nación remembered him three decades ago. In that stay he formed his own museum, a space that has remained in the memory of the locals - a collector allowed us to document the treasured works of that unique group - and of the lovers of Creole culture who visited it in their time, such as the author of these detailed lines.
The collection of Latin American crafts at the José Hernández Museum
Daniel Schávelzon *Collect and donate, a journey that happens with some frequency and that, at Hilario, we promote. This time a protagonist, a great scholar and cultural manager, the architect Daniel Schávelzon, tells us about his experience. Let his testimony put us in the shoes of a passionate treasure hunter.
