STIRRUPS COLLECTION

Pair of stirrups. The Oriental Armory. Montevideo. Late nineteenth century.

Pair of bell-type stirrups, cast, made of white metal. All its lines, very careful and with a high aesthetic voltage; we appreciate it in the eye -transversal-, in the arch -where the hallmark of the importing house is located- and in the skirts, with scalloped, smooth edges and a central motif that alludes to the Luso-Brazilian empire. Also notable for its elegance is the design of the tread or hollow, openwork, with an oval section. Measures. Stapes. Height: 19 cm. Opening: 8.7 cm. Weight (of both): 973 gr.

Let's say about the La Oriental armory that it is an old introductory house installed in Montevideo; it is identified from 1881 onwards through its advertisements, during those years with two addresses in this city simultaneously: 129 Ituzaingó street and 55 18 de Julio avenue. Its first partners were Verninck and Desteves, and they imported French shotguns , Belgian and English, various Rodgers articles, bridles, stirrups, spurs and even medical and dental articles. From 1902 the commercial firm turned to the company name Desteves & Cazot. Its area of economic penetration extended to the Argentine coast and the Brazilian south, the precise destination of these stirrups, today presented in our catalog spreading the collecting of Creole arts in its most diverse manifestations.
