The publication, one of the most important magazines of its time -and of all times in Argentina- was published between 1898 and 1939 with a total of 2,139 issues. Its beginning was in 1890 in Montevideo under the direction of Eustaquio Pellicer, who moved to Buenos Aires, beginning the series in 1898 under the direction of Fray Mocho (Eduardo S. Álvarez).[1] In his staff we find great caricaturists, such as José María Cao Luaces, Manuel Mayol, Hermenegildo Sábat Lleó and among the writers, Horacio Quiroga and Fray Mocho himself stand out.

The publication, following a fashion in Europe, gave importance to the image, whether it was drawings, caricatures or photographs; It was a pioneer in the use of photoengraving, an innovative technique that allowed texts to be incorporated into images. From its inception it was presented as a festive, literary, artistic and current affairs weekly. In its issue, the first article deals with the National Exhibition of 1898 and a few pages later it opens the section aimed at "paying homage to beauty and grace in the stars of the feminine world" with a photograph showing the widow of Florencio Varela, Justa Cané, remarried to Andrés Somellera, now deceased... At eighty-three years old, she holds her direct descendant in her fourth generation in her arms.

Note:

1. It had been agreed that the magazine would have as director the son of Bartolomé Mitre, Bartolomé Mitre y Vedia, who for insurmountable reasons had to resign just hours before the launch, in 1890 he died.
