"And there were the former vows waiting for me..."
The work that Sergio Barbieri offers us brings together half a century of research, focusing his gaze on these specific works of art and devotion made by the most diverse goldsmiths settled in much of the country.
These “promises” or “miracles,” as they are popularly called, are the ex-votos that testify to acts of faith; that relationship between man and the supernatural. “The ex-voto is that tangible artifact that is left at the feet of the images or hanging from their clothes” -explains the author.
Regarding this researcher and photographer, says Brazilian specialist José Claudio Alves de Oliveira, "The richness of popular manifestations, cultural heritage, the symbolism of exvotive practices and the marks of popular religiosity, constitute the reflections presented in the long and rich career of Sergio Barbieri.”
This work is nourished by the deepest Creole beliefs and shows us its particular manifestation in the hands of qualified and anonymous silversmiths.
